These poor terrified parents, isn't that awful? I suggest if at all
possible, lending them a video of kangaroo care. I have seen some that are
very encouraging and positive and make it look fun! (don't ask me which
ones, sorry, UNICEF I think). Then I would encourage mom to wear the baby
between her breasts as much as possible (all day and nite) and could she
feed at least some at breast with a supplementer?  There is recent research
on premies obtaining more milk via nipple shield at breast then without, and
since baby is used to bottles, maybe a nipple shield would work and giving
the supplement via the sns or similar device. Then I would have her come in
to the office 2x per week if this is helpful and reassuring, can weigh baby
or jsut assess progress. Can you hook her up with another mom who had
similar situation from your nicu? or put her in contact with a LLLL or
similar support that has expereicne with premies? Good luck.
