Subject: charging for donor milk in hospitals

Hello!

I=92m hoping those of you that provide banked donor milk in your hospital= s might=20 share how the purchase and charging for the milk is handled. In our NICU = we=20 are going to begin having donor milk on hand from the milk bank. We are=20=

planning to purchase the milk with a purchase order, but the question tha= t has=20 been raised is whether to charge the individual patient for the milk by a= line=20 item charge or to include it in the overall room fee in which every patie= nt then=20 shares in the cost as other food and nutrition is charged. Please let me= know=20 what your hospitals do. Our finance dept. is looking at going toward the= room=20 fee route.

Tammi Martin RN, IBCLC

Tammi,

The way we did it when I was at a hospital with a NICU is that Food Service purchased it since they were ordering all patient food. There was no extra charge for the patient.

That's wonderful that you all will be using donor milk. We had such good luck with it.
