Hi Rachel,
The left breast nipple appeared cracked, had been bleeding and currently
scabbed over. She had not nursed on that breast for two days. Otherwise,
normal color, soft and noteably smaller than right breast, no milk currently,
although she had thought she did have milk coming in on that side. She did
have radiation on the left breast. I did not do a thorough exam for tongue tie,
but will this afternoon. However, she is certainly able to elicit a very good
finger suck. She was certain that everything was doing great up until the day
before I saw her when she became engorged, was unable to latch, skipped
several feedings, baby was very hungry, etc. I have spoken to her twice
since seeing her and she is in a much better frame of mind and baby is much
happier. She has been able to express and give at least 40-50 ml q 2 hours.
She has started pumping on left side with no milk as of yet. I am going to
introduce a shield today if she still has severe areolar edema and we are
unable to latch infant. Of course, I want her at the breast. I will keep you
updated. Thank you for your comments! What do you know about radiation
and milk production? I have yet to have experience with that.
Thank you,
Laura
