Jennifer,
So sorry you did not get a response to this. I hope some of the midwives
will comment. I do not have any concrete evidence to offer you, but since
she bf thru 2 healthy pregnancies, I can't see how bf is having any impact
whatsoever on the resolution of this situation.
On the contrary, I would worry that the unresolved miscarriage might
adversely affect the lactation, with potentially a lowering of her supply.
However, if she has not had any effect so far, it should continue to resolve
with no problems to the nursling.
If she wants to continue conservative management, I had an experience with a
miscarriage, where I just had serial hcg levels done until they were
undetectable, and the bleeding I was having had stopped. I was not bf,
however.
I would advise this mother to continue conservative management, continue bf,
and following up with her provider until the loss is fully resolved. I would
have her ask her provider for signs and symptoms that would indicate she
would need to be seen right away or consider surgical management. This would
be unrelated to the bf, but just so she is sure her general and reproductive
health is not adversely affected.
I am sorry for her loss.
