I don't have 'scientific reasons', but I think of:

1) Baby is associating some artificial smell with sucking, instead of
his/her mother's scent, which might be confusing and might interfere
with the whole infant/mother bonding thing.

2) Any time a smell is present, it is due to minute particles in the
air, so baby is being exposed to *another* chemical, and I'm sure
it would be *artificial* vanilla. (not that *real* would be any better)
