A couple of posts have made reference to staple foods becoming
allergens. Another potential factor in triggering allergic responses is
the volume taken in of a particular food. Perhaps this is like the issue
of lactose overload, where an *imbalanced* intake of human milk (too
much "foremilk") causes a reaction that has in the past been interpreted
as lactose intolerance. I am thinking along the lines of dairy, for
instance, which often when moms simply cut back on their intake,
problems improve. I once "pigged out" on fresh apple cider, and by the
evening my baby was screaming. When I cut back my consumption to a juice
glass a day, we were fine.

Too much of any good thing seems to have the potential to cause
problems. Natalie Shenk IBCLC has dealt with some very difficult
"allergic to mom's milk" situations that required much investigation and
persistence. One strategy that has helped a couple of her moms when
babies seem to be sensitive to "practically everything" is a rotation
diet. Mom is careful to not eat the same things every day, but to rotate
so that each day's diet is comprised of different foods. How often a
food can be repeated depends on the individual situation. I have been
very intrigued by her success with this, and it certainly plays into the
idea of not stressing the immune system with too much of something that
it may be sensitive to, keeping overall reactions below the threshhold
for problematic symptoms.
