"When applying for the IBLCE exam, candidates must demonstrate completion of
continuing education in the following 6 topics. These continuing education
courses may be provided by independent education providers or academic
institutions. Basic life support (for example, CPR); Medical
documentation; Medical terminology; Occupational safety and security for
health professionals; Professional ethics for health professionals (for
example, the IBLCE Code of Ethics); Universal safety precautions and
infection control."

Jaye again...Now wait a minute - I must have seriously been under a rock
somewhere to miss this nonsense. Why on Earth do I need medical
documentation, Occupational Safety, Universal Precautions, etc??? I don't
work in a damn hospital! And I never, ever, ever, ever (did I mention
never??) will. And what if someone who wants to be an IBCLC has NO desire
to ever work in the medical environment and wants to ONLY be private
practice? I can understand CPR and Professional Ethics - but the rest?

And what about those in other countries?? Perhaps they don't have or need
this type of information either...doesn't seem ethical or fair at all from
my point of view for IBLCE to making this so USA oriented. That does not
imply International anything from where I sit.

So - folks - what do we do about this?? Can we do anything about this? Is
IBLCE even listening? I share the same frustrations as other in regards to
IBCLE - I have had my own issues with them in the past that left me far, so
far, from impressed. All of this really makes me wonder if I will bother
with recertifying in 2015. Maybe, hopefully things will have changed by
then. For me this feels like Drama. It's 'all about the USA' drama and
'forget that the requirements don't make sense for the PPLC' and those in
hospitals have a point: They will get that in their jobs there (as it
should be). And forget that this is supposed to be International and the
requirements are causing serious difficulties for folk in other countries as
well as newcomers (coming from a more grass-roots/mom entering into the
field) to become IBCLC.

And frankly - it stinks.

Respectfully,

Jaye

Who might just go back under that rock...sigh.
