I would say that this may be partially true, but in a NICU, a pacifier should
be used for non-nutritive sucking for comfort when mother(and her breasts)
are not available. If her baby, on discharge, is not a competent enough
breastfeeder that she feels comfortable to nurse in public (and some mothers
report to me they don't feel they are quite yet), then maybe a pacifier is
OK--to wait to get to a place to feed him. I'd even rather she gave him a
bottle to feed him than not, if he's frantic to eat. It's a waste of energy
for a premie to be waiting for feedings. Of course, this statement all
depends on his gestational age and abilities. Maybe next time, offer her a
quiet place to nurse and explain that when he needs to eat, he needs to eat!!
