I saw a mom today who gave me permission to share this info with you and I am
hoping you can share any info you might know that relates to the situation.
Premie born at 29 weeks is now 3 months old. I saw this mom about a month ago
when she came to rent a pump because her supply was lagging since baby had
become accustomed to bottles in NICU and she was trying to get him back to
breast. She had been using pump in hospital while he was in NICU but now that he
was discharged, she still needed to pump. She was clear on the fact that she
wanted only breastmilk in this baby and had struggled with NICU staff in the
particular hospital she was in, respecting the importance she placed on
breastmilk whether through tube feedings, or bottle, or at breast. She accepted the
fact that he needed supplementation but was still adamant about breastmilk. She
educated herself well and stuck to her guns about this. A couple of weeks
ago, the baby was diagnosed with Rickets and she was told that there was not
nearly enough calcium in breastmilk for a premie which resulted in her baby having
Rickets. She was told the same thing about the iron levels in breastmilk.
Of course she felt terrible and was told that the important thing was for her
to give up on breastfeeding and get the right formula into the baby to correct
his condition. She and her husband are of very limited incomes and the baby
is now on Elecare which she says costs upwards of $1000 a month. She is hoping
to have baby switch to Enfamil Infacare asap. I am lost here, finding it
hard to believe that this could be true about breastmilk, yet wondering how else
could this have happened... Any input appreciated... thanks, Ann
