A wise LLL Leader once suggested that nursing could be called "special
time." Then when the nursling becomes verbal, he can publicly request
"special time." Only mama and nursling would know the real meaning!
I see the time when normal nursing is 'normal.' As more hospitals provide
comprehensive lactation services, mothers will receive the help they need
to breastfeed for a normal length of time.
We are beginning to see hints of this here in Charlotte. Our lactation
center has a mother's group which has expanded, by customer request, to
include a group for nursing mothers of babies over 10 months. The hospital
probably doesn't even realize that it supports a group of walking nursers!!
I expect similar services are happening at other institutions.
