Karyn-grace Clarke is over her three post/day limit, and asked me to post
the following on her behalf.

She also asked me to let Lactnet know that she will be on vacation as of
tomorrow (Sat) morning and will not be able to continue this discussion as
actively as she would like.

(Let's wish her luck as she makes her submission tonight! :-) )

Sam, what you write IS a huge aspect in my 'one IBCLC for every child
bearing
woman' proposal.

For example, if you go to the doctor with a terrible headache, and the
doctor
discovers it stems from an absessed tooth, the doctor would never dream of
dispsensing advice to help you overcome that situation. He may give you a
prescription for a painkiller 'in the meantime' but, he will immediately
refer to
you the EXPERT in the field of absessed teeth! He would know that your
situation is OUT of his SCOPE OF EXPERIENCE and he would ensure that you
received the proper medical care with the proper experts as soon as
possible.

This does NOT happen with lactation, expect in rare circumstances where a
lactational specialist is needed. But, why are doctors, denstist, nurses,
or
ANYONE not properly certified giving out information about lactation?!? Why

do we accept that?

Even a PHN with an 18 hour breastfeeding course behind her, in my mind, has
NO BUSINESS dealing directly with issues that centre around breastfeeding.
Why? Because by the time the mother presents to her, it's too late. If
that
mother has already added a supplement, what is the PHN to do? I'll tell
what I
hear her do in my community: "Oh...okay." What other choice does she
have? Matter of fact, what choice do I, and the only IBCLC in my community,
have? None! I cannot tell you the number of mother I have recently come
into contact with who have stopped breastfeeding at one or two months -
just because! It's infuriating.

This is why EACH and EVERY woman needs ONE IBCLC that she develops a
relationship with, so that issues and challenges - such as continuing to
breastfeed through separations - can be dealt with before they occur.

Blessings!
