I had a client a few years ago that was very interesting (don't we get those
once in a while!) . She was 19 and originally seen at a home visit for
engorgement with inability to latch. During the visit she revealed that she
lived with the father of her baby, a 45 yr old who owned a business called
Erotic Emporium. She was one of those mothers that I definately felt was a
fence sitter and her lifestyle didn't seem to be breastfeeding friendly (she
also had implants and was thrilled that she could fit her size 7 jeans at 5
days ppm). Anyway, she over came her initial problems and fell in love with
breastfeeding so I had the opportunity to talk with her several times.
The next call came 2 months later after she had pursued the perfect tan (like
we don't have any real sun here in Fl!) in a booth and became terribly burned
in areas that had formerly been covered by her suit. This allowed a case of
yeast to develop and she was terribly uncomfortable. It took longer than
usual to clear up because of the sunburn. So please make sure mothers are
protecting sensitive skin!
Oh by the way she called me when her daughter was 24 mos. and still nursing,
had moved in with her family, and went back to school. We never really know
how things can turn out!
