It is not clear from your post what she is being treated for does she have a
Urinary tract infection, kidney infection or acute gastroenteritis?
Certainly,  a UTI caused by E coli can be treated by any number of
medications if this infant is too "weakened" for septra.  One med that comes
to mind is keflex or another cephalosporin.  However, we use septra in
infants over 6 weeks without a second thought so I  find this interesting.
I would be inclined to ask,  if this child had an infection due to e-coli
would they trreat him with septra?
This infant will be given such a small amount of septra via mother's milk and
certainly the risk of infection and the stress on this infant's body from the
potential use of formula outweighs the risk of such a minimal amount of
antibiotic if indeed "septra" is the only choice(which is unlikely).  Chris
