Rebecca,
I'll share what I learned at aconference and the references on
IDDM.Apparently Diane Miller has done some classic work that appears in:
Miller, DL Birth and long term unsupplemented breastfeeding in 17 IIM
mothers, Birth Fam J 4:65., 1977
Miller, DL Diabetic mother advocates breastfeeding for mutual health,
happiness and satisfaction. Diabetes in the News, June 1975Kostrabe, J et
al: Early exposure to cow's milk and solid food, genetic predisposition
and IDDM, Diabetes 42:288 - 95. 1993
AAP NOVEMBER 1994 BF for 1st year is stronly endorsed. With family

history, avoid cows milk products nad products with cows milk protein for
1 year. Soy is not advised because animal studies link soy with IDDm.

MONTE, WC et al. BSA (Bovine Serum Albumin) detected in infant formula ia
a possible trigger for IDDM. JADA 94:314, 1994
He states the it was believed that IDDM was caused by a virus nad BF
protected through immunity, but believes the majority of cases is the
exposure to BSA in infants that at some point triggers IDDM. Powered
formula has BSA, One brand has 2x as much as cows milk, liguid formulas
seem free of BSA BUT may contain a subunit of BSA capable of this insult
