I apologize for the two previous notes. I wasn't wearing my glasses!

Need some help with this mom I'm working with: Mom gave birth to a healthy
baby on 7-3-02. She is still bfing her 20 month old 1 - 2 times daily during
pregnancy. For the past 10 -15 months she has only been feeding from one
side due to "burning pain in one breast." Her OB told her at the time that
this began that the baby must have caused the breast pain by poor latch, and
to quit bfing. Mom did not believe baby did anything to cause pain and
decided to just feed on the "good " breast. No problem.

Now we have a newborn and mom is letting jealous toddler nurse while newborn
feeds. Toddler feeding numerous times a day. "Bad" breast really hurting.
Now today, nipples on both breast hurting, and blood from "bad" breast.

What is the possibility that she has long standing yeast in one breast? And
if it is yeast, do both babies need to be treated along with mom?

I suggested that the blood is coming from trauma to nipple, not from poss.
yeast. But I guess my main question is can yeast stay in non-nursed breast
for months and left untreated?

Thank you, Loretta Haycook, RN, IBCLC
