I believe I've written before about my 11 lb 5 1/2 oz grandson (of course
it was a difficult vag delivery :-) His ears were even bruised) Mom got to
hold briefly in L & D but they were so concerned with his obvivous size
that he was whisked to nursery before BF 1st time. Given D5W "in case"
(blood sugar was OK, but he was definetly LGA). Promptly desatted and
brady'ed with bottle in mouth. Went to special care nursery and got
monitored.

Did fine with BF - mom came to nursery to feed and sat on her poor bottom.
Follow-up bottle of D 5 W insisted by nurses because "we don't know if he
got anything", he promptly desatted and brady'd again! My dear d-i-l said
NO MORE bottles and made them only let him nurse. His sugar was never ever
low through the whole LGA protocol. But he was in special care for 24
hours and it was very upsetting to family!

Later I spoke with Paula Meier about him at a conf. She said he was a
stressed baby, just like a premie and of course he reacted to the bottle in
similar fashion, but did fine with BF.

I'm always putting in my appeal for common sense, which protocols leave no
room for. At least my dear d-i-l asserted hers! Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
