Holly, One suggestion I'd add to Morgan's excellent post is to use humor
as an ice breaker and in regard to skin-to-skin, you might make an extremely
strong point by demonstrating S-T-S and then saying the lecture is over (
barring anatomical anomalies and other factors, like medication in labor,
this one simple act sets the stage for successful, long term breastfeeding).
I do this in my breastfeeding class and it always gets a laugh, puzzled
looks and the occasional knowing nod from moms who've already done reading.
I reiterate the importance of S-T-S throughout the class and it's one of
the last things I say. The compelling work of Nils Bergman on the brain
wiring that occurs with S-T-S and the lifelong deleterious effects on the brain
when this does not occur in that Golden Hour (days/weeks) makes a powerful
point that S-T-S is not just a warm fuzzy, but imperative.
