I've been surprised not to see mentioned on Lactnet (but I might have
missed it) the new study that claims there is no benefit to breast
self-examination. (I can't get the details now; my mil has lost my
newspapers...) The study showed that women who did breast
self-examinations regularly were not better able to detect them at an
early stage and when they did, they were more likely to assume they were
malignant when they weren't... No difference in outcome. Many survivors
and hcps are objecting to the decision not to recommend breast
self-examination. I am wondering whether women who breastfeed and are
comfortable handling their breasts are not better at detecting lumps
than those who examine them systematically, as well as having a better
sense of what is normal and what is not... Are breast self-examinations
another way that we medicalize the breasts, or am I just making excuses
for my laziness?
