Welllllll -- IME, the tykes that have fed well at the breast at least 3 or 4
times prior to the circ seem to go right to the breast afterwards (all our
babies are taken straight back to mom after the circ is done) as though they
know and remember what to do and that it is a wonderful place to be.  The
punkins that have been struggling to figure out how to latch on, and maybe
(if we are lucky) have fed well once or twice or not at all, or have been
given bottles in the nursery at night and the circ is done at 10:00 in the
morning seem to not have a clue as to what to do when they get back to mom.
Most of those babes sleep and fuss for about 6 to 8 or more hours and
continue to struggle w/ the breast.  Often it is 12 hours or more before we
can settle into a relatively reasonable breastfeeding pattern.

So I think it has to do w/ timing and how well the baby has breastfed before
the circ is done as to how well he will breastfeed thereafter.

I'd love to have a policy that stated that babies had to breastfeed well (a
good breastfeed (GBF) according to CNM's descriptors of breastfeeding) at
least 3 times in a row before they could be circ'd.
