Dear all:

We had an EXCELLENT radiologist and surgeon speak at our fall conference for the New York Lactation Consultant Association. I cannot do the topic justice, but the radiologist did say that women CAN have mammography while lactating although the changes in the breast must be taken into account. He made a VERY articulate case about why the change to fewer mammograms for older women was ill-founded. Most notably there were NO radiologists on the committee that put into place those recommendations. Wouldn't you want a board certified lactation consultant on a committee making recommendations about breatfeeding interventions?

He also was very articulate about the different types of problems that are picked up by mammography and sonography.

He had even more to say about how one should investigate first whether the radiology would be taking place in the same facility as where any surgery such as biopsies might take place. In some cases they do guided biopsies with MRI, but if the MRI takes place in a different facility at a different time, you cannot use the results for the guided biopsy. Insurance often won't cover a 2nd MRI and you wouldn't really want a 2nd one anyway.

If the woman were in New York City I would certainly refer her to this particular radiologist who has LOTS of experience with lactating breasts.

Best regards,

Susan E. Burger, MHS,
