This is a very standard question, but I thought last night, after I talked to
the mom, that it would be interesting to see what other Lactnetters would
say:

This mom's first baby is 4 days old. She has had good latch since right
after birth, she is well hydrated and is varying position. She is developing
a very sore, almost black (she is Cape Veridan) area on the top of each
areola where it meets the breast. She thinks it will bleed soon. She is
using a pacifier because the baby "is sucking every 2 hours, and seems to
suck just to fool around." She said her mother-in-law wants to bond with the
baby and so is pushing bottle feeding.

In addition she asked what to do about the "blues". Worried about when they
will pass.

I suggested Lansinoh, ice before nursing, checking for complete latch on,
rest, lots of fluids (it has been really hot here), being careful with the
pacifier use, telling her m-i-law to cuddle, sing, hold baby for bonding...,
and keeping supportive people around her while asking draining people to come
back in later months. I also sugggested that she go easy on herself, she is
doing well as a mom and needs to not worry when the blues will pass.

Any other ideas, different considerations?

Thanks!
