Linda: I so agree with your experience! I just had a similar discussion
not more than 10 minutes ago with one of our SCN nurses about allowing baby-
led feeding. I don't have any research studies to back me up, just 25+
years of observation. I firmly believe that when a baby is allowed
unpressured, uninterrupted time skin-to-skin with mom, his pre-programmed
brain will not only figure out what he needs to do to get him to the
breast, but even more importantly, allow his brain to organize itself for
feeding, which leads to more co-ordinated feeding behaviors. And like
Linda has discovered, the LC ends up with a pocketful of "interventions"
that stay in the pocket. I also have consistently good luck with babies
latching well (and correctly) unassisted or minimally assisted onto semi-
erect, flat or inverted nipples. Seems like once we stick our hands in
to "help" is when we find that we need interventions to make it work.
Just my 2 cents worth!
