        This white patch sounds like a callous forming to me.  Results from
continual pressure or abrasion on a specific area.  I've also seen this
when a scab has fallen off, and the underlying tissue is new and soft and
gets pulled and squished during nursing.  I would try a different position,
and make sure the baby is snuggled in very close with mouth wide open.  If
mom has a rapid let-down,  try having to baby's head held a little higher
as well, as sometimes babies will hump up the backs of their tongues and
squish mom's nipples is an attempt to deal with the volume of milk.
