My pediatrician (who has done extended, tandem, and pregnancy nursing with
her children) says this blanket recommendation for Vit D supplementation for
bf infants is "ridiculous and completely not based on objective research."
She says Vit D supplementation should be reserved for ONLY those infants
whose skin is "very, very dark--almost true black." Then, and only then, do
some of those infants (and their mothers) have a hard time absorbing Vit D
from the sun because of the massive amounts of pigment in their skin. She
tells me she will not be giving Vit D to anyone except those just described.
I happen to applaud her and agree with her completely. We need more docs
like her!! :-)
