While the mother is learning instinctively from the baby, his messages and
signals in the first two days, it is probably true that she may not absorb
so much external stuff e.g. breastfeeding advice etc.
If we consider the huge booster of endorphins she has produced during labor,
particularly if she was drug-free, it is no wonder that she is a bit
spaced-out or jet-lagged. There was a study done once by Prof. Eidelman
then head of the neonatal dept of Shaare Zadek Hospital in Jerusalem on the
effects of pethidine in labor. He was of course looking for residue in the
blood of neonates but he gave a questionnaire to the mums and found
something interesting.
Drugs such as pethidine - and epidurals also have this effect - reduce the
natural endorphins so the next day the mothers remembered every single
detail of the labor, for better or worse.
Those who did not have drugs in labor were still euphoric from their own
endorphins even the next day and not yet focussing on everyday issues.
Nature`s wonders!
