Hi all,
I am supporting a mother who has a 10 mo and a problem. One of her
nipples has a lump on the outer side and it is tender and swollen. With
very gentle manipulation in a hot bath has managed to obtain 3 beads of
something yellow; she is not sure if it is milk or pus. She is now
feeding from the other side as she cannot bear her baby on the affected
breast, and pumping (battery operated) on the affected side. The pain is
only at the nipple and not in the breast behind.
She has not detected a build up of milk behind the lumpy nipple,
although she does not see any milk being expressed from that area. Her
normal feeding positions are lying down, baby upright, and baby across
tummy, so I suspect that the problem area does not get as much
stimulation as the rest.
Any ideas as to the cause? Her gp has tried giving her a course of
antibiotics, but confessed that he was not sure what he was treating,
but has said to keep feeding.
