I have a client who tried sage tea for oversupply after having less than
perfect success with management changes. She found it made her more
comfortable and reduced milk supply to drink 2-3 cups a day, but the side
effect was postural hypotension (she got lightheaded when she stood up) and an
increase in migraine headaches. She discontinued the tea and experienced
immediate rebound of her supply.
I think this case reinforces the neccessity of informing the mother
when herbal remedies are largely untested, and carefully following her for
adverse effects if she chooses to try one. Anything potent enough to have
pharmacologic effects will likely have side effects as well.
