I can't count the number of times I've assisted a mother told she shouldn't breastfeed because the medication she's taking during pregnancy is incompatible with breastfeeding. One of my co-Leaders is a Social Worker and we've had discussions around treatments "allowed" during pregnancy but not during breastfeeding.  Her thought is that while the baby is in utero it is not yet a patient, so the health of the mother is paramount. Once baby is born, the HP sees two patients and errs on the side of "protecting" the baby. This could also explain the "blinders" some have around the drugs used during L&D--baby is not a factor until s/he is in arms.
