I remember once, in my early days as a breastfeeding mother, I felt like I
needed to cover my squirmy baby: I threw the (lightweight cotton flannel)
blanket over MY head, making a tent over me, John, and all the various
things I wanted to cover (mostly, like the previous contributors to this
discussion, I was worried about the tummy flab more than the nipple
exposure). John thought it was hilarious, and he was less distracted--once
he was about his business, I uncovered us both. I probably wouldn't do that
now, but it got me through without separating us.

As a side note, do you know of any studies that evaluate the experience of
mothering through breastfeeding as determinative of future parenting
behaviors? Now that my son is in preschool, I'm noticing a different
attitude among mothers who breastfeed--more confident, more laid back, less
concerned with the externals, less concerned about comparing their children
to others, etc. This is by no means scientific, of course just my
observation of mothers with whom I'm in contact.
