For all of you who didn't save, read, or print it the first time, here is
the Lactnet welcome message, as it was in 7/96. Enjoy! (please print this
out and save it in a folder marked LACTNET for future use....you never know
when you might need to go nomail, mime, or index. This will not be repeated
for a LONG time,....I promise.I feel the need to print it now, however, as
there seems to be a lot of confusion about command address vs people
"Lactnet" address. Thank you. Kathleen

WHO IS LACTNET?
LACTNET is a vehicle for sharing professional information regarding
lactation and case management. We welcome all Lactation professionals to
Lactnet...including lactation consultants and educators, childbirth
educators, nurses, LLL leaders, midwives, dietiticians, WIC personnel, MDs,
social scientists, etc.. LACTNET is for exploration and debate of ideas about
lactation and related breastfeeding issues.. and all postings should be
considered as being in that spirit. Points of view expressed or
counterarguments raised should never
be construed as necessarily being the views of those partcipating in the
discussions... etc.). Please be aware that all posts are ARCHIVED in the
Lactnet computer at UMMED. Everything you say on Lactnet is retrievable by
others, and will be retrievable, and searchable by keyword. If you don't
want what you post to be stored locally on our archives, **don't post it.!**

If you are ***not*** a professional involved in the field of lactation, and
are joining LACTNET to seek advice with your own lactation
situation..please **STOP**. LACTNET is not the place for this type of
subscription. Inquiries about personal problems with breastfeeding or
concerns are ***not accepted*** at LACTNET at this time. Instead, go to...

 * Parent-L, a list for mother to mother (and father, grandfather, sister,

your area. ILCA's e-mail address is [log in to unmask] or...

* La Leche League International (LLLI): (Web page

difficult to get through to.)

If you post personal notes asking for assistance on LACTNET, your
subscription will be terminated. We are sorry, but we cannot handle the
volume of mail that would ensue.

WHAT IS LACTNET?

The LACTNET list is designed to promote a "marketplace of ideas" and is
aimed at promoting the FREE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION. Comments posted on
LACTNET is neither verified nor endorsed by the co-owners of the list, nor
is it monitored for accuracy.

LACTNET is an informational discussion group for lactation consultants and
other professionals interested in lactation consulting and breastfeeding.
By receiving this message, you have now been added to LACTNET, and you will
soon receive compact digest groups of messages from the UMMED computer. All
subscribers are immediatley set to DIGEST. Our traffic is around 100
messages per day with more than1100 subscribers world-wide. All messages
are public; **the list is open.** Therefore, you should post **ONLY** what you
are willing to have printed on the front page of the NY Times.*** LACTNET's
ARCHIVES are available on the WWW at
                http://library.ummed.edu/lsv/archives/lactnet.html

REMEMBER: LACTNET IS PUBLIC. If you mention a client's or a colleague's
name, please obtain their permission in advance. DO NOT post addresses and
phone numbers (yours or anyone else's) publicly. Remember that LACTNET, as
with other lists, though expressly for professionals, is read occasionally by
others who join without our knowledge and for purposes different from ours.

On LACTNET, you are joining people who come from all walks of life: IBCLCs,
MDs, RDs, RNs, pharmacists, LLL leaders, midwives, social scientists, WIC
representatives, etc. BEFORE YOU POST ANY NOTE TO LACTNET, it is YOUR
responsibility to READ this entire message, and to print a hard copy for
future reference. If you lose it and ask us later for help, we will not be
*amused.* : /

LACTNET MAY NOT BE USED FOR COMMERCIAL BENEFIT OF ANY COMPANY or
individual. INFORMATION found on LACTNET may not be reproduced or quoted
without the EXPRESSED PERMISSION OF THE AUTHOR. All company representatives
(defined as persons who are employees of that company) subscribed to LACTNET
**must** identify themselves as such with every post. If you are
signing onto LACTNET, or are already on LACTNET, and are a PAID
EMPLOYEE of any company--ESPECIALLY those of any industry associated
with lactation, breast pumps, related equipment, or artificial baby milk
manufacturer or pharamaceutical company--you may NOT post notes to LACTNET
without identifying yourself as an employee of that company. This applies
to EVERY note you post on LACTNET.
For example:
"Jane Doe here, and I work for Ross Laboratories, or Medela.. or Playtex,
..or Egnell..or Johnson & Johnson, or Gerber, and so on. My opinion of this
issue is blah blah blah..." or "My thoughts are this...and This is why I
think it..."
J. Doe, IBCLC
Employee. of XXX company

NOTE: You need **not** identify yourself as a pump rental station agent.
You are not paid by the breast pump company and you are not their employee.

IMPORTANT LACTNET COMMANDS

There are two addresses to this and any other listserv.

1. Mail commands like SUBSCRIBE LACTNET Jane Doe IBCLC
go to the COMPUTER address:

            [log in to unmask]

It responds to commands.

2. Mail notes to all recipients of LACTNET (the PEOPLE address) to:

            [log in to unmask]

Your first note to LACTNET should be an introduction. REMEMBER: Only the
listserv address (and NOT the Lactnet address) responds to commands and
command notes sent to the [log in to unmask] address will be read by
all subscribers of
LACTNET, who will then know that you have not read this welcome message.
Avoid embarrassment: use the correct address!

NETIQUETTE RULES FOR LACTNET
These rules are taken seriously by the list owners. Any posts that break
these rules are grounds for immediate termination of your LACTNET
subscription.

AVOID MENTIONING BRAND NAMES: Please refrain from the injudicious use of
brand names. In most cases, a generic term, such as cylinder pump, bottle
liner, rubber/silicone teat or pacifier/dummy, semi-electric breast pump,
fully automatic intermittent electric breast pump, etc. will suffice to get
your point across. If you wish to discuss or obtain specific information
about particular products, USE PRIVATE EMAIL.

Remember that companies and groups may have unidentified representatives on
LACTNET "lurking" (listening in) to see what LCs and others are saying
about their products. Religious groups, artificial baby milk company reps,
and authors of an anti-breastfeeding nature have joined LACTNET in the
past. If you MUST mention a product, group, or book by name, identify the
information you are sharing as rumor, clinical experience, hearsay, study
finding (with complete reference) when you share that information. Sharing
unfounded information may make you liable for expensive and painful legal
action against ***YOU***.

EXPLODER LISTS: Do not use software to explode LACTNET list to others.
Exploder lists are not allowed here... DO NOT PRINT OFF LACTNET MESSAGES to
distribute or publish elsewhere without the EXPRESS permission of EACH of
the authors whose messages you wish to share.

CONFERENCE POSTINGs are considered advertising, which is **NOT** allowed on
LACTNET. Send it in to JHL or to the GLOBE or to email lists provided for
this purpose. See our WEB page links for more information.

EXAMPLE OF AN INAPPROPRIATE CONFERENCE ADVERTISEMENT: Conference so and so
is occurring with such and such speakers on x date and in y place. For more
information, contact me/them/us, etc. WRONG! NOT ON LACTNET!!

Please be considerate in your comments. We enjoy the participation of
people from many countries and cultures. Breastfeeding practices differ
from culture to culture...lactation assistance techniques differ from
person to person...Avoid embarassment, antagonism, legal redress, and
similar unpleasantness: BE CAREFUL AND CAUTIOUS about what you say and
about whom/what!

Naming names in a derogatory way is not acceptable on LACTNET. Neither is
bashing of one group or another...such as doctors, LLLers, ILCA, WIC
personnel, etc. Doing so places everyone at risk for SLANDER OR LIBEL
suits, even if the posted comment is true. Legal precedent has already been
set in several cases involving comments made on the "internet". We do not
want to become another example, so please act in an adult fashion. Comments
that are not appropriate for PUBLIC hearing/reading should be sent by
PRIVATE EMAIL. You are responsible for your own comments at all times.
First time offenders of this rule will receive a private written warning
from one or both of the co-owners of LACTNET. Second time offenders will be
deleted permanently from the list. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Responding to an inquiry WITHOUT mentioning the name of the product or
company, or doing so only***once***, in order to provide information or
clarification is appropriate on LACTNET. When discussing the merits of any
product or service, please PREFACE YOUR REMARKS WITH "In my opinion." This
makes it clear that it is your OWN opinion, and not that of Lactnet owners,
etc...

EXAMPLE OF AN APPROPRIATE (informational) POSTING ABOUT A PRODUCT/SERVICE:
"I really liked XXX Product/LC TRAINING COURSE/BOOK because....blah blah..
If you wish information about it, write to [give address for this
purpose]."

Mentioning the name of the product/company ***more than once** OR providing
prices of same OR suggesting that professionals OR THEIR CLIENTS contact
you, or the company distributing/ making the product/service in question in
order to solicit their business is EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN! This is ADVERTISING
and LACTNET is *not* the place for this. Sharing information is one thing;
advertising and soliciting client contact is NOT ALLOWED! First time
offenders of this rule will receive a private written warning from one or
both of the co-owners of LACTNET. Second time offenders will be deleted
permanently from the list. There are no exceptions to this rule.

EXAMPLE OF AN ADVERTISEMENT (INAPPROPRIATE POSTING): "I work for blah blah
company. Did you know that blah blah company has a product/service which
can help you? Blah blah company offers/quarantees the following.... Blah
blah company's product can help you/your client accomplish blah blah goal
within x-days/weeks/months. For more information, contact me." WRONG! NOT ON
LACTNET!!

EXAMPLE OF AN ADVERTISEMENT (INAPPROPRIATE POSTING):" My book or so-and-so's
book says blah blah. You can purchase it for $$XXX" .WRONG! NOT ON LACTNET!!!

QUOTING FROM LACTNET

You may see something that someone has posted to LACTNET that you wish to
share in another context, such as a newsletter, etc. What you post on
LACTNET has the effect of being placed on the front page of the NY Times.
This means you MUST secure written (via e-mail or hard copy) permission of
the original poster of the message in order to share it in some other
context. This is both polite and ethical, AND enables you to credit the
originator of the message. We, the co-owners of LACTNET, expect that all
subscribers will honor this official announcement and recommendation. Thank
you.

GENERAL LACTNET DO's...
a. share concerns about cases, and ask questions. We have a wealth of
knowledge here!
b. share suggestions for solving problems you have encountered
c. support the work efforts of other LCs and related professionals
d. cite references. This is helpful for people who want/need them.
e. quote MINIMAL amounts from other notes to make your point. EXTENSIVE
QUOTING is illegal; authors may consider it plagiarism; publishers may
consider it stealing!
f.Keep your messages short and to the point; many subscribers are paying
PER MESSAGE.
g. Post NOTES to the ENTIRE GROUP to the correct address
([log in to unmask])
h. SET YOURSELF NOMAIL if you are going to be away from your mailbox.

GENERAL LACTNET DON'T'S...
a. Bash other professionals, no matter how high your level of aggravation
(this has nasty and expensive legal implications for the person making the
statement, LACTNET, and all recipients of such a message.
b. Advertise commercial products obtainable at a profit to those who
distribute same (this is not an infomercial outlet).
c. Bad mouth commercial products by brand name (this has nasty and
expensive legal implications for the person making the statement, LACTNET,
and all recipients of such a message).
d. Talk nasty . Members of Lactnet come from all
regions worldwide, walks of life, and have varying affiliations.
e. Scan in pictures or documents of any size. Large files may cause Lactnet
to BOMB, and we may lose the good graces of our host.
f. Attach documents to notes going to LACTNET.
g. Use LACTNET as a resource for mothers needing assistance. LACTNET is NOT
FOR MOTHER TO MOTHER SUPPORT. It IS for LC to LC support, or nurse to LC
support, or MD to IBCLC support, etc. If your clients need assistance with
bf, and you refer them to LACTNET for help, **YOU** will be removed from
the list. Please feel free to refer clients needing help to appropriate
local sources. See our WWW page for more info on this.
h. POST COMPUTER COMMANDS to the [log in to unmask] address. LACTNET .
i. Post conference notices or advertisements of any kind on LACTNET.
j. Post personal notes to your friend in x-city because you can't find her
e-mail address. PERSONAL NOTES must go via PRIVATE E-Mail.

SUBSCRIBER REMOVAL POLICY OF LACTNET

The co-owners reserve the right to remove individuals from this list with
or without cause. In general, behavior which is substantially disruptive
to the list and which is known (such as the DON'Ts listed above) by the
perpetrator to be inappropriate will lead to removal from LACTNET. An
individual who is removed from the list will be notified of this action of
her/his removal by private post from one or both of the co-owners.

*** VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING MAILBOX ERRORS AND MAIL DELIVERY ***

All LACTNET accounts are set to DIGEST and MIME automatically. Thus, you
receive LACTNET in compacted form. All LACTNET messages are lumped into
400-line increments...and will save you money and us error messages. Instead of
receiving each message separately, you will receive perhaps 3-15 messages
in one message clump (Digest). If you do NOT wish to have this setting,
write to [log in to unmask] with the command SET LACTNET MAIL. If
you do this, you must be aware that your mailbox may then become MEGA FULL
VERY QUICKLY. If you have a limited amount of storage space on your
systemor if you DO NOT check your email daily, you may QUICKLY exceed your
electronic mailbox capacity. LACTNET can generate 100 or more messages PER
DAY. A mailbox can become full after 2 days of unread messages.. , If your
site generates multiple errors, OR if we receive a FULL MAILBOX signal from
your provider, YOUR SUBSCRIPTION WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DELETED FROM
LACTNET. Such error generation is a real pain for us, and costs us MONEY.
EVERYTIME a message bounces out of YOUR full mailbox, it lands IN ours. : (
If you are bumped off because of error messages, feel free to RESUBSCRIBE
once your site is again functioning.

KEY COMMANDS

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE AWAY and NOT reading your messages, send the
following command to the [log in to unmask] address: SET
LACTNET NOMAIL

When you return, send a command:

                                     SET LACTNET MAIL

and your mail will be resumed .

To resume the DIGEST function, send the following command to listserv:

                                            SET LACTNET DIGEST

If you are interested in receiving only a MENU of messages, send this command:

                                            SET LACTNET INDEX

This will get you regular indexes of Lactnet messages, and you may pick and
choose from them and order what you wish to read from Lactnet.

LACTNET subscribers with concerns or questions about the above information
should direct their concerns/questions/comments to KB ([log in to unmask])
or KGA ([log in to unmask]). ENJOY!

We thank you for your participation, and look forward to meeting you on
LACTNET! If you want to check out our WWW page, check out this LACTNET WWW
