I can't tell you how often I go over and over the idea that no matter how
good the latch looks "if it hurts, it's wrong." I think I am finally
getting through to my colleagues. That has been a tough concept for most
of them to wrap their heads around, but I am pleased with how they have
adapted. I also make sure I tell every patient I see the same thing so
that they will ask for help if they are uncomfortable.
The other concept that has taken me some time (and I am still working on
it) is the idea of milk transfer. Again, I repeat "just because the baby
appears to be nursing well does NOT mean he is transferring milk."That one
took a while but it is coming as well. Teaching about when to use a test
weight has helped there. The pediatricians took a while to get it as well.
I find that if I pick just a couple of key points for the staff and
concentrate on those, it is far more productive than worrying about trying
to get a lot of information passed at one time.
There will always be those who can't (or won't) get it and as frustrating
as that is, we have to let them go. That's when educating the parent can
really help.
