I'm not familiar with the brand names of the decongestant/antihistamine
drugs mentioned for the congested mom, but if she has allergic rhinitis,
why not use intra-nasal steroids instead? Serum levels are low to
non-existent, and they work well for many with pollen/mold/dust mite type
allergies. Dr. Hale says pseudoephedrine is fine as a decongestant - I
recommend 30 mg every 6 hours or so. If she is congested due to vaso-motor
rhinitis, a simple decongestant is better than combinations.
Antihistamines have many side effects - many are anti-cholinergic and can
lead urinary retention (in mother and baby), sedation or paradoxical
excitement, dry mouth,etc.
