Heather asks why a qualified lactation professional would recommend limiting feeds to three hours.  At the hospital where I used to work, mothers of near term babies were instructed to feed "at least" every three hours.  In other words, they were supposed to wake sleepy late pre- termers to feed a minimum of every 3 hours, and not allow them to go longer than that without feeding.  However, what I suspect some mothers ( and maybe nurses,too) actually may have heard was to feed "only" every three hours.  The lactation consultants were encouraging feeding as often as the baby cued to feed with no restrictions, but wake them if they had given no cues by 3 hours.  But it is possible a mother ( or the instructing nurse) may have misunderstood the actual intent of the recommendation.
