"I had a mom come into the breastfeeding class this morning in
tears. A nurse had yelled at her for carrying the baby in her arms instead
of rolling him around in those awful plastic boxes on wheels. ( I have a
rule in the breastfeeding room: all babies in mothers' arms, and NO plastic
boxes, unless they are twins, and the mom does not have extra help at that
moment. ) Later I asked the nurse about this. She said that once many years
ago a mother fainted with the baby in her arms, therefore all babies have to
be in the bassinette.

Esther Grunis, IBCLC"

This post caught my eye; I was surprised not to see a reply from anyone
else. When I gave birth to my 2nd in the hospital I worked in, I was
soundly scolded to go back to my room when I came into the hall with baby
in arms. The policy is very strict on this - as a security issue against
those rare, tragic cases of newborns being kidnapped from hospitals. **No
one** is allowed to take newborns outside of mom's room unless in a
bassinet. The idea is that someone trying to kidnap an infant would be
stopped if carrying the baby. It was based on recommendations from some
national (U.S.) organization. Don't know if it has helped.
