Thanks, everyone, who wrote to me reassuring me that the baby's weight
gain sounded OK, and thanks to Katherine Dettwyler for her explanation
of the WHO growth charts.
I tell mothers that the current growth charts are based on a small
homogeneous populations etc and that the pediatrician needs to look at
HER baby's growth chart-is the baby showing weight gains at each visit,
etc.
My main concern for this baby is the flutter sucking and apparent falling
asleep at the breast after 3-5 minutes of eating. Someone suggested an
SNS to stimulate more active swallowing, but we need something to put in
it! If mom can find the time to pump, this could be an option. Are we
cheating the baby if we don't add some supplemental feeds? What would be
interesting-if the baby would STILL quit after 3-5 minutes. Should she
be evaluated for underlying organic problems? (i.e. cardiac problems?)
