I had a rather unusual request yesterday, and wanted to share with you for
your information, but also for your thoughts. Was approached by the company
that handles our hospital's photos of new babies, asking if it would be okay
to add a marketing flyer insert for a breast pump company to their current
photo package info. Evidently this is a pilot project. Was told this would
be for their mid-grade pumps, although cannot be certain of that. The
patient would have the info to read, the pump could be purchased along with
the photo package, and the pump delivered to the patient's home.

4 thoughts came to mind...1) NO education provided, other than "if the
patient has questions, we'll refer them to a local lactation consultant" 2)
mid grade pumps? 3) Do we want to send the message that a mother can't
breastfeed without mechanical assistance? A breast pump is NOT part of the
layette 4) Our hospital has a contract with a competitor.

Seems to me that I don't want to market anything like this; be it formula
bags, formula, pumps, etc. Any other ideas anyone can think of before a
letter is written?

Thanks in advance,
Linda Duce RN, CNM Austin, TX
