I was glad to see Maureen's post on leaking not being a bad thing.
I tell mothers that leaking in the first few weeks is a bit messy, but a
good thing, and I suggest a cloth diaper or a dish towell on the "other side "
while she feeds to help keep baby and mom dry.
I just say that the hormones are high, and your body just wants the baby to
have a lot of milk. This is for the beginning weeks. Then when the supply is
well established at about 6 weeks, leaking usually stops. (The breasts are more
ready to go out in public easily!)
If leaking is continuing, that's when it may help to use the forearm to
apply gentle pressure to discourage the extra milk flow. For a very few mothers
who have been concerned and wet, the Blis has proved to be effective. Like all
gadgets, it has to fit right, and a bra has to help it stay on without being
too tight. It's a bit expensive, and not readily available around my area.
Thicker pads or the ones with plastic backing help keep clothes dry and are readily
available.
