Dear Stacy, in my practice, the best position would be the football, or side
hold. This way, the baby's chin can come forward with gravity helping ....
And mom can visualize the baby better...and the baby's mouth, angle of
opening, etc. The mother should be informed that the baby can only go so
long with this technique, and that the milk supply will drop as the breast
continues to not be emptied regularly. Babies who lick a plentiful supply
often end up not gaining well due to a diminished supply that has down
regulated as a result of bad latch.

The mother will want to be very careful with latch, using breast compression
to get the baby sucking and breastfeeding effectively in a rhythmic pattern
of suck/swallow. Why did the mom wait until 11 weeks to ask for help?

Kathleen
