It seems the only thing that hasn't been looked at for this very courageous
mother is a bacterial infection. The skin of the nipples doesn't *always*
break down, though it usually does ... I worked with one mother a few years
ago whose nipples only looked pink, not damaged, but the pain was severe,
and just would not go away. Thanks to a co-operative doctor, we were
eventually able to request a culture of the milk, and the organism was
treated with the appropriate antibiotic (2 courses, as I recall - it took a
loooong time to resolve) and mother went on to happily breastfeed without
pain for months and months.
