Darlene -
I have very little experience with Blue Cross. But for what it's worth... I
got a call from a Mom with a baby born at 28 weeks. She said Blue Cross had
promised to pay for pump but none of their 'registered suppliers' had pumps
in. She was in great emotional distress (understandably) so I took it on
for her. BC agreed to reimburse me on a once only basis for the rental.
They authorized 3 months (which they later extended because baby still not
at breast, for one more month). The Mom was v. determined - and, I later
found out, was a Blue Cross employee!!
It was hell to get paid because of inefficient bureaucracy and eventually
they accidentally paid the Mom... (she did forward check to me!)
However the rep I dealt with gave me info on becoming a Blue Cross DME
provider. I found out they do reimburse for breastpumps - low rate though,
only about $35 per month (however, they paid me my regular rate for the one
off basis, and paid for the kit). I had to get a MediCARE # 1st - took
months and months - I got it last week and haven't tackled the next round
yet.. But a nurse I deal with regularly at Mass General Hospital told me
that Blue Cross weren't particularly useful anyway because (as I mentioned
yesterday) they only reimburse if baby is born before 32 weeks gestation.
I can't understand why they told you they don't reimburse - they have a
standard rate they quoted over the phone... Tell 'em they do it in Boston!
