Slightly off-topic, but I listened to a radio show on wildlife a few
weeks ago (during naptime) and heard that blue jays had been picking
paint off houses this year. Some insightful people assumed that the
supply of calcium-rich foods was inadequate, and put out a saucerful of
crushed egg shells; it solved the problem of picked-at paint.
So, I would say that Naomi and Katherine have headed us in the right
direction, although it might be good to go for more nutrient-dense foods
than chalk (I'm thinking that if this were my child, she would be
filling up on chalk and not getting enough vitamin C, or something.)
