I completely agree with Rachel Myr....well put. It seems wildly
inappropriate to me to even entertain the idea that a 9 year should be in
the position of caring for a baby at night. A 9 year old should not be put
in a position requiring that level of responsibility. Besides, at 9, she
is still growing and is in need of solid, not broken sleep. There is also
a good chance that she could sleep through any and all noises her sibling
would make at night....I've seen many kids who are dead to the world when
they sleep. I'm guessing that if she chooses to share her parents room
after the baby arrives, she'll either sleep through the night feedings or
retreat to her own quieter room if she wakes. It would certainly give her
a chance to feel more included.

Just my thoughts,

Priscilla Tansley RN, BSN, IBCLC
