Hi all,

I had a discussion the other day with one of our physicians about human milk osmolality. The concern was milk osmolality if hind milk or high fat milk was fortified, especially when fed to infants with a history of intestinal infection. Would the osmolality be higher than fortified human milk (not concentrated for fat content)? We most frequently use liquid fortifier and liquid protein in VLBW babies at a certain point on our feeding protocol. As they get closer to discharge, human milk is fortified with Neosure or Good Start.

Can anyone direct me to research on this subject?

Thank you,

Kristi
