When I adopted my first child, in 1983, I had a desire to breastfeed, but
almost no support, and very little knowledge (and much of what I had told
was incorrect). What I ended up doing was feeding formula with bottles, and
nursing, without a supplementer, for comfort. It was obvious that Stephen
took comfort from my breast, that he did not get from the bottle. This was
especially true the night that he was having a severe reaction to the
Pertussis vaccine. He wanted nothing to do with his bottle. The only thing
that would stop his screaming was my breast. After nine years of struggle
to become a mother, I was honored to be able to comfort my baby in a way
that no one else could.

Aloha,
Darillyn
