I am a group worker in our local lll and one of the moms asked for your
collective advice for her situation.

Mom is nursing her 14 month old toddler and is considering having her gall
bladder removed via laprascope due to stones. She has no plans to wean any
time soon. The problem first presented when she was in her first trimester
and her surgeon wanted her to go ahead and have the surgery but her OB said
no. She is now considering the surgery but the surgeon now says she has to
pump now to have Breastmilk for the child for 3-4 days post-op as she can't
nurse for that long so the drugs can clear her system.
I think the most interesting irony is that he was willing to do it in the
first trimester but NOT while she is nursing a 14 month old! She does not
expect to stay overnight in the hospital.

She is feeling somewhat rushed about having the surgery because she may
lose her insurance later this summer and is unsure whether she should take
a chance on needing surgery later when she would have to pay out of
pocket.

Should she just go ahead and have the surgery and nurse right away anyway?
Should she request certain (more child friendly) anesthetics so she can
more safely nursing sooner? Should she find a more approachable
surgeon/anesthesiologist ?

If anyone knows any drugs which should REALLY be avoided or some that
would be appropriate, please share them with me.
Also, for those of you in the Greater Cincinnati area, if you know of more
friendly surgeons and/or anesthesiologists please email me privately as she
is willing to change if needed.

TIA,
Julie Lancaster
