At the hospital where I am employed, we use triple dye on the cord as well
as an inch around on the baby's abdomen. (Suppose to better protect against
infection) Alcohol is then used on the cord every eight hours while in the
hospital and up to every diaper change at home.  After the cord falls off,
alcohol is still applied to site for another two days.
I don't have any references with me at this time.
