The BMJ article found that suckling at the breast was at least as analgesic
as sucking on a dummy with sugar (a bit back the front there but that's how
it is in the paper). Does anyone know if they have looked at whether sucking
on a bottle with formula does the same? Have a ref (would be very handy for
a paper I need to send in the next couple of weeks)?
My thoughts are that perhaps sucking on a bottle would have an analgesic
effect but not as strong as with breastfeeding because of the absence of
skin to skin contact. I am presuming that the absence of skin to skin is
made up for in the sugar dummy treatment by the higher concentration of
sugar than is in human milk or formulas (is this the case?)
Appreciate insights.
