Hello all!

I resieved a phone call yesterday from a mother of a 4 month old baby (have
not seen the mother). I have mother´s permission to post.

The mother is healthy 39 years old, breastfeeding her second baby (breastfed
older child also with no difficulties). The baby is now 4 month old,
exclusively breastfed. About 1,5 weeks ago the mother got foot, mouth and
hand disease (coxackie A virus) and at the same time her both breasts got
painful. The first doctor thought that pain was due the disease, but it did
not disappear when the other symptoms disappeared. The mother describes
"typical trush symptoms", with burning sensation and shooting pain towards
chest. The nipples are somehow dry, but not red. The pain is so severe that
she has needed full time dose of acetaminophen daily and this medication
does not control pain enough. Breastfeeding is painful. The mother has seen
a couple of MDs who have not been able to figure out what is going on. The
mother suspect thrush and asked medicine for that and has tried two topical
medications without help. She has been doing other things also, hygiene ok
and baby has been treated also, no visible thrus in baby´s mouth. We talked
about situation and the mother sounded painful even in phone. I said that
the symptoms sounded like thrush and the next step would probably be trying
systemic treatment as is in texts. I suggested that she can try add
ibuprofen also for a couple of days until she can get to the MD again. But I
also promised to ask here, if somebody have heard about breast pain with
virus disease (foot, mouth and hand disease)?

Happy New Year!
