I don't wish to put words into Mary Kay's mouth that don't belong there but perhaps she is attempting to articulate something that I have sensed about our list group (and IBCLC's / BF professionals) for quite some time now. I, too, have been a LLL leader for many years, and an IBCLC for 20 years. I sense a disturbing trend among LC's of the "us against them" mentality. 1). Us: The passionate, caring, rescuing, professional, against, Them: The mother who is so victimized by her doctor/big business/males/society that she cannot begin to advocate/think for herself. 2). Us: who diagnose buckets of babies born with tongues that keep them from breastfeeding, and think moms need to squeeze colostrum into spoons to keep babies alive during the first 36 hours of life, against, Them: who diagnose buckets of mothers who can't make enough milk to feed their babies, and think all babies are at risk of death if they sleep with their mothers. 3). Us: who endlessly debate the ingredients in pac
ks of Lansinoh while never mentioning the ingredients in Triple Nipple Ointment (Bactroban, Betamethasione, Nystatin, mineral oil, polyethylene, white petrolatum and 2,3-Epoxy-5-hydroxy-4-methylhexyl]tetrahydro-3,4-dihydroxy--methyl-2H-pyran-2-crotonic acid, ester with 9-hydroxynonanoic acid, calcium salt (2:1), dihydrate.) and, 4) Us: who have promoted a thriving Big Business devoted to making money selling breastfeeding products, against them: who have promoted a thriving Big Business devoted to making money off of selling artificial baby milk products.

And another thing...How have we managed to turn breastfeeding into rocket science?

Stepping down now...the air is getting rarified :)

Respectfully,

Holly McSpadden
