Diane,
Where is baby's tongue while he is latching onto the breast and sucking?
Tongue retraction is the most common cause of biting- the tongue over the
lower gum ridge inhibits the bite reflex. If baby pulls back the tongue, the
bite reflex is stimulated. add on slightly high tone and you have real pain
for mom. Cup feeding can be helpful to stimulate tongue extension.
For relaxing the mouth, Wolf and Glass recommend gently clamping
baby's cheek between 2 fingers, one inside and one outside the mouth, and
gently wiggle the fingers to vibrate the cheek.
Another thing that helps with tongue retraction, even in tongue tied
babies is to have mom lean back while nursing, so gravity is pulling the
tongue forward. The football hold can be especially useful here.
Good luck, keep us posted.
